Cypriot Sites of Interest

The Akamas
This remote area in Western Cyprus is one of the most peaceful and tranquil areas on the island due to the absence of tourist development and the beautiful Mediterranean environment. The main reason this area has restricted any tourist development on is due to its outstandingly beautiful environment and unique species of plant and animals. There are a network of paths in this area designated for walkers and cyclists.

Cyprus Museum

When you are in Nicosia, visit this museum. You will see here the most beautiful of Cypriot artifacts and archeology. You can also take a leisurely snack in its café before you go on exploring what else the museum has in store for you.

Kourion
Kourion is renowned as one of the most important and beautifully situated architectural sites in the Republic of Cyprus. The theatre seats over 3500 people and impressively sits right on the coast between Limassol and Pafos overlooking the sea. It is thought that thousands of years ago this was built to stage gladiator battles for the Greeks and Romans.

Lara
Visit the bays either side of the Lara headland situated north of Pafos to try and turtles coming ashore to breed and lay their eggs. There are regular boat trips from Pafos to this area.

Troodos Mountains
If you fancy a break from the warm beaches and coastal cities, then why not make a trip up to the Troodos mountains where you can enjoy a refreshing cool breeze while you walk around the beautiful villages and towns situated between the large rolling hills of the Troodos. If you visit in the winter you can also enjoy skiing on Mount Olympus.

St Hilarion Castle
Situated in the hills of Kyrenia, this beautiful hilltop fortified monastry has spectacular coastal views. However, getting to the highest points can be tricky so it is advised to bring your walking boots and a lot of water.

Pafos Mosaics
The mosaics of Pafos were only discovered just over 20 years ago and they have quickly become one of the most impressive attractions in the area. You really do have to be there to realise just how impressive these huge mosaic masterpieces are. Each mosaic tells a different story in Greek mythology and were once the Villa floors of the wealthy Roman noblemen.

The Town of Lanarca
This is a little town were you can have a pleasant walk along the seaside of Larnaca Promenade. There are also lots to see here, the Church of St. Lazarus for one as well as the Larnaca Salt Lake where you can usually see pink flamingoes during the winter season. You can also visit the Hala Sultan Tekke Mosque and the Tomb of Umm Haram, the Mohammed’s foster mother.

The Town of Paphos
This is where the famous Greek goddess named Aphrodite was said to have been borne. You will see here the Paphos Archeological Park that contains the Roman villa ruins of the House of Dionysos and the House of Theseus, and these two are renowned for their mosaic designs. You can also visit the Paphos Fort and learn about its lively history.

The Tombs of the Kings
This is not really the burial site of kings and queens of olden times but the burial site of Cyprus’ prominent and wealthy citizens as well as officials. What is sad is that their tombs have been pillaged free of its many treasures, but nevertheless, it is still a wonderful place to visit. The richer the citizen, the grander and more complex his tomb site is.
